La Mirada/Serrano Park Meeting Location Change

UPDATE: La Mirada/Serrano Park Meeting Location Change

From Councilmember Garcetti’s Office:

“Because the forecast calls for rain tomorrow, we have moved the location of our meeting to Palomar Apartments at 5473 Santa Monica Boulevard near Western Avenue.  If, by some miracle, the clouds part, we will meet at the location at Serrano and La Mirada.

Also, anyone who was planning on participating in the community walk in the morning, we will do that another day.”

MAK Center’s Newest Art Project: How Many Billboards? Art In Stead

Mega-billboards on Hollywood and Vine

Billboards are a hot topic in Hollywood — whether you think they distract drivers, add value to real estate, spice up the urban landscape or just add visual clutter to the streetscape, just about everyone has an opinion.

Whatever your stance, the MAK Center for Art & Architecture has taken an innovative and artistic approach to billboards with their new large scale exhibition: How Many Billboards? Art In Stead.  The MAK Center commissioned 21 contemporary artists (including Kenneth Anger, Ken Gonzales-Day and Martha Rosler) to “critically respond to the medium of the billboard and interpret its role in the urban landscape.” The billboards will be posted beginning today along major boulevards running from LAX to Downtown, including Sunset & Hollywood Boulevards.

On Saturday, February 27, a free reception for the project will be held at the MAK Center’s Schindler House in West Hollywood, and related lectures, screenings, and tours  will take place until mid-April.  To stay up-to-date with the project, visit http://www.howmanybillboards.org/.

Help put a pocket park on La Mirada and Serrano Avenue!

Did you know…

In Los Angeles, only 10% of the city’s land is allocated towards parks.

The City of Los Angeles has 4.2 acres of park space per 1,000 residents while the national averages range from 6.25 to 10.5 acres per 1,000 residents.

Council District 13 has approximately 0.38 acres of park space per 1,000 persons, one of the lowest compared to the other 14 districts.  The average city council district park figure is 0.966 acres per 1,000 residents.

The good news is Council District 13 and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA/LA) are applying for a grant to turn the vacant lot on the corner of Serrano and La Mirada into a pocket park.  In order to improve their chances of receiving the grant, they are reaching out to the community to find out what residents (including children) would like to see in their neighborhood park.

When: Saturday, February 6th from 12-2pm!
Where: Corner of La Mirada and Serrano Avenue in Hollywood
What: Share your ideas and review design elements for a pocket park, participate in art projects (for children), and enjoy some refreshments

Please see the flyer in English or Español for more information.
