Adult Bicycling Safety Classes

Biking in a car dominated city like Los Angeles can be challenging and overwhelming for new cyclists.  Luckily the City Cycling Training program is currently offering two great new classes on bicycling! The Confident Adult Cycling Class will teach you how to ride safely, legally and with confidence on city streets. It’ll also give you skills like fixing flats and basic bike maintenance. The Bicycle Commuting Class will teach adults the tips and tricks to get to work or school by bike.  There are several sessions for each class, running all summer long. Dates and times of the classes can be found here.

Walk the Path to Promise Neighborhoods!

Help the Youth Policy Institute understand the needs of Hollywood and Pacoima residents, parents, and youth by participating in their survey effort! YPI is collecting this information as part of the Promise Neighborhoods initiative, President Obama’s signature program to help struggling communities that aims to bring cradle-to-college-and-career services to improve educational outcomes and promote the healthy development of our children and their families.

The online survey is available both in English and Spanish, and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. If you live, go to school, or have a child who goes to school in one of the Promise Neighborhoods below, please take the time to participate! The Youth Policy Institute will be collecting surveys through the end of the day Friday, April 8th, 2011.  All answers will be anonymous and confidential, and the results will be shared with the Department of Education as part of their grant application to bring millions of dollars to these communities to help implement the Promise Neighborhoods vision.

To answer the survey, go here: Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood Community Survey.

Can You Balance LA’s Budget?

Screenshot of the LA Budget Challenge

With national, state and local budget issues headlining every other news article or TV broadcast, there’s no doubt all levels of government are feeling the effects of these trying economic times. It can be difficult to figure out what’s at stake as our elected representatives struggle to balance the budget.

The Los Angeles Budget Challenge gives everyone a chance to try and fill the local fiscal gap with their own blend of fees and service cuts by providing an online simulation that allows the user to increase, decrease or maintain funding for various services, from police and fire to parks and recreation.  Should the city increase funding for road maintenance? Further cut library funds? Eliminate employee pension plans? You decide.

After you’ve enacted your remedy to deal with the deficit, you can get a summary and breakdown of your choices complete with graphs and charts that you can print or email to friends. You can even share your thoughts with the mayor! Give it a try by February 27.

HCS Small Business Survey Interns Hitting the Streets of Hollywood!

A survey volunteer with internet sensation Antoine Dodson on Hollywood Boulevard

Do you run a small business with 20 or fewer employees on or around Hollywood Boulevard between La Brea and the 101? If so, you might be asked to complete a short survey on the state of doing business in Hollywood by one of our small business survey interns. For the next two months, our student interns will be canvassing the area to get business owners’ feedback on the advantages and disadvantages of doing business in Hollywood, how the economy is affecting your business, and what the City can do to help. We’ll be issuing a report on what we find in the spring of 2011.

If you’re a small business owner or manager and see our one of our friendly interns and can spare a moment, please take the survey! Or, if you’re located between Franklin and Selma Avenues and La Brea and the 101 and have fewer than 20 employees, you can take our survey online.
